Grunge stripped rock down to its raw essentials. Distorted guitars, dissonant chords, quiet-loud dynamics and emotional lyrics defined the early 90s sound that came out of Seattle. It was the antidote to 80s excess.

Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam are the pillars. Their songs are surprisingly accessible to learn, but playing them with the right feel takes work.

The Grunge Sound

1989-1994, Seattle and the Pacific Northwest

Grunge grew out of Seattle's punk and metal underground in the late 1980s, and the guitar playing carries both those roots. The rhythm work is built on power chords in Eb Standard or Drop D, deliberately raw and unhurried, with none of the technical showmanship that defined 80s rock. That stripping back was intentional: grunge players chose feel over flash.

The central idea in grunge guitar is the quiet-loud dynamic: clean, almost fragile verses that switch into full distortion on the chorus. Getting that contrast right, the exact moment of the switch and the tonal difference between the two modes, is what makes the playing work. Cobain's rhythm parts in particular show how much can be communicated with a simple riff and the right dynamics.

Alice in Chains pushed the genre into darker territory with dissonant chord voicings and heavily syncopated Drop D riffs. Soundgarden experimented with non-standard tunings and odd time signatures. Stone Temple Pilots kept a bluesier feel in the rhythmic playing. The common thread is intensity over complexity.

Grunge Guitar: Less Is More

Grunge guitar is deceptively simple. Power chords, drop D tuning, and heavy distortion form the foundation, but the genre's real trick is dynamics. Kurt Cobain's genius was in the contrast between whispered clean verses and explosive distorted choruses. That loud-quiet-loud structure became the blueprint for a decade of rock music.

Alice in Chains added a darker, more metallic edge with harmonized vocals and dissonant chord voicings. Soundgarden experimented with unusual tunings and time signatures. Pearl Jam kept one foot in classic rock with bluesy solos and melodic riffs.

Smells Like Teen Spirit is the most important guitar riff of the 90s. Come As You Are teaches clean-tone melody. Black Hole Sun explores unusual chord voicings and mood.
